Unlock Childhood Nostalgia with Copycat Little Caesars Crazy Bread

For many, the mention of Little Caesars conjures up fond childhood memories. Growing up, Friday nights often meant pizza night, and while the “Pizza! Pizza!” was a welcome sight, my excitement always peaked for the accompanying Crazy Bread. That warm, buttery, garlicky, cheesy goodness was often the highlight of the meal, surpassing even the pizza itself. Years later, as I embarked on a mission to perfect a homemade version of Little Caesars’ Crazy Bread, I stumbled upon a delightful revelation.

During one of my recipe tests, after perfecting the dough and before adding the signature Parmesan, I took a bite of a freshly buttered breadstick. The immediate thought that flashed through my mind was, “Wow, I just made Olive Garden Breadsticks without even trying!” This accidental discovery confirmed a long-held suspicion for many food enthusiasts: Little Caesars Crazy Bread and Olive Garden Breadsticks are, at their core, remarkably similar. Both feature long, soft breadsticks generously slathered with fragrant garlic butter. The key distinction lies in the finishing touches: Crazy Bread is rolled in Parmesan cheese and traditionally served with a side of marinara for dipping, while Olive Garden’s version relies solely on the garlic butter for its iconic flavor.

Mastering the Art: How to Make Perfect Garlic Breadsticks

Creating these sensational garlic breadsticks is a surprisingly quick and straightforward process, making it a truly rewarding kitchen project. Here’s a detailed guide to ensure your homemade breadsticks turn out perfectly every time:

  1. Activate the Yeast with Precision: Begin by combining warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast in a small bowl. The water should be lukewarm, just slightly warmer than room temperature (around 105-115°F). Water that is too hot will kill the yeast, while water that is too cold won’t activate it effectively. The sugar provides food for the yeast, helping it bloom. Allow this mixture to sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes foamy and bubbly, indicating the yeast is active and ready to work its magic. This step can conveniently be done in the bowl of your stand mixer if you’re using one, minimizing extra dishes.
  2. Jumpstart Your Dough with Warmth: In the bowl of your electric stand mixer (using a paddle attachment, not a dough hook initially), combine the flour and salt. Add surprisingly hot water to this mixture. This technique is a fantastic shortcut – the hot water jumpstarts the proofing process, meaning you won’t have to wait for the dough to rise for an extended period. Don’t worry about killing the yeast; as the hot water mixes with the cooler flour, its temperature will drop to an ideal level, warm enough to accelerate the rise without harming the yeast. Mix on low speed until combined.
  3. Combine and Knead to Perfection: Once your yeast mixture is wonderfully foamy, pour it into the flour and hot water mixture in the stand mixer. Switch to a dough hook attachment if available. Start the mixer on low and gradually add the remaining cup of flour. Allow the mixer to run for several minutes, or knead by hand on a floured surface, until the dough becomes incredibly smooth, elastic, and pulls away cleanly from the sides of the bowl. This ensures a well-developed gluten structure, crucial for soft and chewy breadsticks.
  4. Shape with Ease: Turn the smooth, warm, and slightly tacky dough out onto a lightly floured work surface. The dough should still feel warm, indicating that it’s already actively proofing. Divide the dough into quarters, then cut each quarter into three equal pieces, yielding 12 consistent portions. Gently roll each piece of dough against the counter into a long, uniform 10-inch rope. This length ensures classic breadstick proportions. Carefully transfer these dough ropes onto the prepared baking sheets lined with parchment paper, ensuring ample space between each for expansion during baking. No additional rise time is needed before baking due to our warm dough method!
  5. Bake to Golden Tenderness: Place the baking sheets in your preheated oven (400°F) and bake for 12-14 minutes. The key to achieving extra soft and pliable breadsticks is to avoid overbaking. They should be just barely golden brown on the outside, remaining tender and slightly flexible in the middle. This ensures they maintain their delightful chewiness.
  6. Dress for Success (Olive Garden or Crazy Bread Style): Immediately after removing the breadsticks from the oven, it’s time for the final, delicious touch. In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the butter and stir in the garlic salt. For Little Caesars Crazy Bread, generously brush 2-3 breadsticks at a time with the warm garlic butter, then transfer them to a large baking dish filled with grated Parmesan cheese. Shake the dish to thoroughly coat the breadsticks in cheese. Arrange the Crazy Bread on a serving platter and repeat with the remaining breadsticks. Serve warm with marinara sauce for dipping! For Olive Garden Breadsticks, simply brush all the warm breadsticks with the garlic butter mixture and serve immediately. Enjoy the rich, comforting aroma and taste!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I Double Or Triple the Batch?

Absolutely! This recipe is incredibly easy to scale up. You should comfortably be able to prepare a double or even a triple batch in a large stand mixer. Simply adjust the ingredient quantities proportionally to accommodate your desired yield.

Can I Freeze The Leftover Breadsticks?

Yes, homemade breadsticks freeze beautifully. Once baked and cooled, place them in an airtight freezer-safe bag or container. When you’re ready to enjoy them, thaw them at room temperature for an hour or two, then warm them gently in the oven (around 300°F for 5-7 minutes) until heated through and soft again.

Can I Add Other Seasonings?

By all means, get creative with your seasonings! Adding a teaspoon or two of Italian seasoning to the garlic butter mixture is a popular choice that enhances the flavor profile. You can also experiment with other herbs and spices you have on hand, such as dried oregano, basil, a pinch of red pepper flakes for a subtle kick, or even a dash of onion powder for added depth.

Can I Make a Dairy-Free Version Of This Breadsticks Recipe?

Yes, a dairy-free version is entirely possible. Substitute traditional butter with a high-quality vegan butter, such as Earth Balance, which performs very well in baking. For the Crazy Bread, you’ll need a vegan Parmesan cheese alternative. A simple and delicious homemade vegan Parmesan can be made by blending 3 parts crushed cashews with 1 part nutritional yeast, along with a pinch of garlic powder and salt.

Can I Make a Gluten-Free Version?

While you can certainly try using a 1-to-1 gluten-free baking mix in place of all-purpose wheat flour, there will be a noticeable difference in texture. The breadsticks will still taste good, but they tend to be more crumbly and less flexible than their gluten-containing counterparts. The unique elasticity of gluten is hard to replicate perfectly, but a gluten-free version can still be a satisfying option for those with dietary restrictions.

Ingredients

For the Homemade Breadsticks:

  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast (one packet)
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup hot water
  • 1 teaspoon salt

For Little Caesars Crazy Bread:

  • 4 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt (or 1/4 tsp salt + 1/4 tsp garlic powder)
  • 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 cup marinara (for dipping)

For Olive Garden Breadsticks:

  • 4 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt (or 1/4 tsp salt + 1/4 tsp garlic powder)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper and set aside.
  2. In a small bowl, combine 1/4 cup lukewarm (just barely above room temperature) water with the sugar and dry active yeast. Allow the mixture to bloom (foam) for 5-10 minutes.
  3. Meanwhile, in the bowl of an electric stand mixer add 2 cups flour and salt. Use the standard paddle attachment. Turn on low and add very hot water. Mix to combine.
  4. Once the yeast is very foamy, pour it into the mixing bowl. Turn the mixer on and slowly add the last cup of flour. Let the mixer run until the dough is very smooth and pulls away from the sides of the bowl.
  5. Dump the dough out onto a floured work surface. It should be very soft and tacky. Cut the dough into quarters. Then cut each quarter into 3 equal pieces, to make 12 equal portions.
  6. Use your hands to roll each piece of dough against the counter, into a long 10-inch rope. Gently move the dough ropes onto the baking sheets, leaving room in between for expansion.
  7. Once all the breadsticks are rolled out, place them in the oven for 12-14 minutes.
  8. For Little Caesars Crazy Bread: Place the butter and garlic salt in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave for 30-60 seconds to melt. Place the parmesan cheese in a large baking dish. Brush the garlic butter over 2-3 breadsticks at a time. Then move them to the parmesan cheese dish and shake to coat them in cheese. Move the Crazy Bread to a serving platter and repeat with the remaining breadsticks. Serve warm with marinara for dipping!
  9. For Olive Garden Breadsticks: Place the butter and garlic salt in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave for 30-60 seconds to melt. Brush the garlic butter over the breadsticks and serve warm!

Notes

  • To Measure the Flour: For accurate baking, stir the flour in the bag, then spoon it into dry measuring cups and level the top with a flat butter knife. This method prevents over-packing the flour, which can lead to a dry dough.
  • Nutritional facts are calculated for Crazy Bread with Marinara. Olive Garden Breadsticks, without the added Parmesan and marinara, would be lower in calories and fat.
  • This recipe is super easy to double. Just multiply all ingredients by two for a larger batch.
  • The breadsticks also freeze well after baking. Allow them to cool completely before freezing in an airtight container for up to 2-3 months. Reheat from frozen or thawed.
