Why You’ll Love This Chicken Alfredo Lasagna
This Chicken Alfredo Lasagna isn’t just a meal; it’s an experience. Here’s why it’s destined to become a staple in your kitchen:
A Culinary Triumph for Any Occasion: This creamy chicken and spinach lasagna is a true showstopper. With its rich, complex flavors and layers of comforting, gooey cheese, it elevates any meal. I often find myself preparing it around the holidays, offering a delightful alternative to traditional festive fare. However, its versatile charm makes it equally perfect for a relaxed weekend gathering, a special date night in, or simply any evening when you have a bit of extra time to savor the cooking process.
Effortlessly Elegant, Not Exceptionally Fast: Let’s be clear: this isn’t a lightning-fast weeknight meal. Like all lasagna recipes, it requires a little patience and several distinct steps. Think of it as a labor of love that yields extraordinary results. The total time from start to finish is approximately an hour and a half, but much of this is hands-off baking time. My personal routine involves prepping it in advance, sliding it into the oven about an hour before dinner, and then unwinding with a glass of wine while it bakes to golden perfection. For those moments when speed is paramount, consider trying our cheesy alfredo pasta bake, a fantastic shortcut version.
The Gift of Glorious Leftovers: One of the many joys of this lasagna is its remarkable ability to improve with age. As it rests in the refrigerator, the savory, garlicky flavors deepen and meld together even more beautifully, and the layers firm up perfectly. Even if you’re not planning to devour all 12 servings tonight, I wholeheartedly recommend preparing a full pan. You’ll be setting yourself up for success with delectable lunches and perhaps another dinner or two throughout the week. Leftovers are truly a blessing!

Essential Ingredients for Perfect Alfredo Lasagna
Crafting this incredible Chicken Alfredo Lasagna starts with selecting the right ingredients. Here’s a closer look at what you’ll need and why each component is vital:
- Homemade Alfredo Sauce: Do not be deterred by the “homemade” label! Our Alfredo sauce is surprisingly simple to prepare using everyday pantry staples. You’ll need rich butter, versatile all-purpose flour for thickening, fragrant minced garlic, classic Italian seasoning, a touch of onion powder for depth, savory chicken base (or bouillon cubes), luxurious heavy cream, and freshly grated Parmesan cheese. The result is a sauce far superior to any store-bought jar, offering unparalleled freshness and flavor.
- Lasagna Noodles: You have a choice here: traditional lasagna noodles that require pre-boiling or the convenient no-boil variety. I personally lean towards classic noodles because their thicker texture provides a more substantial bite, and I appreciate the control over achieving that perfect al dente chewiness. No-boil noodles, while a fantastic time-saver, are generally thinner and can sometimes result in a less robust pasta layer. If you’re pressed for time, they are a perfectly acceptable alternative, just be mindful of the texture difference.
- Chopped Cooked Chicken: This recipe is incredibly adaptable, making it an excellent vehicle for leftover or pre-cooked chicken. A readily available rotisserie chicken from your local grocery store works wonders, offering succulent, flavorful meat with minimal effort. Alternatively, you can bake a few chicken breasts the night before or earlier in the day. Even leftover grilled chicken adds a delicious smoky dimension to the lasagna. The key is tender, chopped pieces that integrate beautifully into the layers.
- Ricotta and Mozzarella Cheese: These two cheeses form the heart of our lasagna’s creamy, gooey goodness. Ricotta, with its delicate, creamy texture, provides a rich foundation, while mozzarella delivers that signature stretchy, melty quality. Together, they create the ultimate “ooey-gooey” cheese dream team that binds the lasagna layers and offers incredible textural contrast. For superior melt and flavor, I often opt for Tillamook shredded mozzarella, known for its thick shreds and exceptional taste. Don’t forget a sprinkle of extra Parmesan on top for that irresistible golden crust!
- Spinach: For this recipe, frozen chopped spinach is your best friend, and here’s why: fresh spinach contains a significant amount of moisture that it releases when cooked, which can make your lasagna watery. Frozen spinach, having been blanched and frozen, has a softer consistency and, crucially, can be thoroughly thawed and drained, preventing excess liquid from compromising the filling’s integrity. Ensure you press out as much water as possible for a perfectly rich and dense spinach ricotta layer.
Step-by-Step Guide to Making Chicken Alfredo Lasagna
For precise ingredient proportions, comprehensive instructions, expert storage tips, and a helpful video tutorial, please refer to the printable recipe card at the conclusion of this post.
Crafting this Chicken Alfredo Lasagna is a delightful culinary journey. Follow these steps to achieve a truly exceptional dish:
1. Prepare the Velvety Alfredo Sauce: I still marvel at how much I used to spend on mediocre jarred Alfredo sauce! Let me assure you, making it from scratch is not only more economical but also yields a far superior result. Begin by melting a generous amount of butter in a large sauté pan over medium heat. Whisk in the all-purpose flour to create a smooth roux, cooking for about 2 minutes while constantly whisking to prevent clumping. Once it turns a beautiful golden hue and thickens slightly, stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
Next, incorporate the Italian seasoning, chicken base, and a hint of onion powder, followed by the heavy cream. Increase the heat slightly to bring the sauce base to a gentle simmer, allowing the flavors to meld. Now, it’s time for the star: grated Parmesan cheese. Stir it in until it’s completely melted and seamlessly integrated into the sauce. Finish by tasting and seasoning generously with salt and freshly ground black pepper to perfection. Set this luxurious sauce aside.

2. Cook the Lasagna Noodles (If Using Traditional): If you’ve chosen the convenience of no-boil noodles, you can happily skip this step and move directly to the next! For those using traditional pasta, bring a large pot of generously salted water to a rolling boil over high heat. Carefully add the lasagna noodles, ensuring they are fully submerged. Cook them according to the package instructions, aiming for an al dente texture – typically on the lower end of the suggested cooking time. Remember, the pasta will continue to cook as the lasagna bakes in the oven. Once cooked, gently lift the noodles from the water and lay them flat on a clean work surface or parchment paper to cool and prevent sticking.
3. Prepare the Creamy Spinach Ricotta Filling: I often tackle this step while the noodles are boiling to optimize my time. In a medium-sized bowl, place the whole-fat ricotta cheese. Next, take your thawed chopped spinach and place it in a fine-mesh sieve over the sink. This is crucial: press the spinach very, very firmly to extract all excess water. It needs to be as dry as possible to prevent a watery lasagna filling. Think of it as a stress-relieving exercise! Once thoroughly drained, add the spinach to the bowl with the ricotta. Season liberally with salt and pepper, then stir everything together until well combined and creamy. This is also where you can mix in any optional add-ins like fresh basil, a pinch of nutmeg, or a dash of red pepper flakes.

4. Expert Lasagna Assembly: Let’s build this masterpiece layer by layer! First, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Take a 9×13 inch baking dish and spread a small scoop of your homemade Alfredo sauce across the bottom. This thin layer is essential as it prevents the first layer of noodles from sticking and adds moisture from the start. Now, arrange three lasagna noodles side-by-side across the bottom of the dish, creating your first pasta layer. Evenly distribute about 1 cup of chopped cooked chicken over the noodles, followed by approximately 1 cup of the spinach ricotta mixture, spread gently. Crown this with about 1 ¼ cups of shredded mozzarella cheese. To complete this glorious layer, ladle one-third of your remaining Alfredo sauce over the cheese.

Repeat this layering process two more times. So, to summarize, each delicious layer follows this sequence:
- Lasagna noodles
- Chopped cooked chicken
- Spinach ricotta mixture
- Shredded mozzarella cheese
- Homemade Alfredo sauce

Pro Tip for Presentation: For a truly beautiful finish on your third and final layer, I recommend spreading the Alfredo sauce *before* adding the last generous scattering of mozzarella cheese. This allows the mozzarella to melt into a wonderfully golden, bubbly crust, making your lasagna look as exquisite as it tastes. While not strictly necessary for flavor, it certainly adds to the visual appeal!

5. Bake to Golden Perfection: Cover the baking dish securely with a sheet of aluminum foil, wrapping the edges tightly to create a sealed environment. Bake for 30 minutes. Then, carefully remove the foil (be mindful of escaping steam!) and continue baking for an additional 15-20 minutes. You’ll know your Chicken Alfredo Lasagna is perfectly done when the top is beautifully golden brown and the edges are bubbling with cheesy goodness. The aroma alone will be enough to make your mouth water!

Meal Prep and Make-Ahead Strategies
If you have the foresight and time to prepare this magnificent lasagna in advance, I urge you to do so! Your future self will undoubtedly thank you for the convenience. Here are my favorite strategies for making ahead:
Freeze Before Baking: My preferred method for meal prepping this lasagna is to assemble the entire dish and then freeze it before it ever sees the oven. For ultimate ease, I highly recommend using a disposable aluminum pan. This ingenious trick allows you to transfer the lasagna directly from the freezer to the oven when you’re ready to bake (just be sure to check the pan for oven-safe temperatures). Avoid placing a cold glass pan directly into a hot oven, as the drastic temperature change could cause it to shatter. To prevent dreaded freezer burn, wrap the pan tightly in a layer of plastic wrap, followed by two snug layers of aluminum foil. When you’re ready to cook, transfer it to the refrigerator to defrost overnight, then bake as directed, adding about 20 minutes to the total baking time.
Bake Ahead and Refrigerate: Alternatively, you can fully prepare and bake the Chicken Alfredo Lasagna earlier in the day, or even a full day before you plan to serve it. Once it emerges from the oven, allow it to cool completely to room temperature. Then, cover the pan securely and store it in the refrigerator overnight. This method is perfect for entertaining, as it frees up valuable time on the day of your event, allowing you to simply reheat and serve a perfectly delicious meal.
Delicious Recipe Variations
While this Chicken Alfredo Lasagna is perfect as is, it’s also wonderfully adaptable! Don’t hesitate to customize it to your taste or what you have on hand:
- Store-Bought Alfredo Sauce: If you’re truly short on time or prefer a shortcut, go ahead and use your favorite jarred Alfredo sauce. There’s absolutely no judgment here! Just be sure to choose a high-quality brand for the best flavor.
- Spinach-Free Option: If spinach isn’t your favorite, or if you simply prefer a purist chicken Alfredo experience, feel free to omit the spinach entirely. The lasagna will still be incredibly rich and flavorful with just the chicken and cheese.
- Fresh Basil Infusion: Elevate the classic Italian flavors by finely chopping fresh basil and stirring it into the ricotta cheese mixture. The aromatic basil adds a bright, peppery note that beautifully complements the creamy sauce.
- A Hint of Nutmeg: This might sound unconventional, but a tiny sprinkle of ground nutmeg in the ricotta filling is my secret ingredient for enhancing the richness and savory depth of the lasagna. Trust me, it’s a subtle touch that makes a world of difference!
- Spicy Kick: For those who love a little heat, mix some crushed red pepper flakes into the ricotta filling. The gentle warmth adds a fantastic counterpoint to the creamy, cheesy layers without overwhelming the dish. Start with a quarter teaspoon and add more to your preference.
- Add Vegetables: Consider adding sautéed mushrooms, finely diced bell peppers, or caramelized onions to the chicken layer for extra texture and flavor.

Serving Suggestions and Perfect Pairings
This Chicken Alfredo Lasagna is hearty and satisfying on its own, but pairing it with the right side dishes can elevate your meal to a truly memorable feast. If you, like me, believe there’s no such thing as too many carbs, consider serving it alongside these baked beauties:
- Classic Garlic Bread: A warm, crusty loaf of garlic bread is the quintessential accompaniment, perfect for soaking up every last drop of that creamy Alfredo sauce.
- Homemade Crazy Bread: Soft, chewy breadsticks generously seasoned and baked to golden perfection.
- Cheesy Garlic Pull-Apart Bread: An incredibly fun and flavorful bread that’s designed for sharing and dipping.
For a lighter touch or to balance the richness, consider these fresh options:
- Crisp Green Salad: A simple mixed greens salad with a light vinaigrette offers a refreshing contrast and a touch of vibrancy.
- Roasted Asparagus or Broccoli: Tender-crisp roasted vegetables provide essential nutrients and a lovely textural counterpoint.
Frequently Asked Questions
A sieve is a type of strainer, often referred to as a colander, characterized by its super-fine mesh or tiny holes. I frequently use sieves in my cooking, particularly for recipes that require thorough straining to remove a significant amount of liquid, such as pressing water from cooked spinach or preparing certain cheeses.
While it’s tempting to dive right into the gooey goodness, for the best cutting, lifting, and overall presentation, I strongly recommend allowing the lasagna to rest for at least 30-60 minutes before serving. This resting period allows the layers to set and the cheese to firm up slightly, making for cleaner slices and preventing the lasagna from falling apart when served. The flavors also continue to meld beautifully during this time.
Absolutely! While this recipe focuses on chicken, you can easily adapt it. Browned and seasoned ground beef, turkey, or Italian sausage would make fantastic substitutes. Ensure the meat is fully cooked and well-drained of any excess fat before adding it to the lasagna layers.

Storage and Reheating Best Practices
Ensuring your delicious Chicken Alfredo Lasagna stays fresh and tastes fantastic for days to come is simple with these storage and reheating tips:
- Storing Leftovers: Once your baked lasagna has cooled completely to room temperature, transfer individual slices or larger portions to an airtight container. Store it in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. I wholeheartedly believe that leftovers often taste even better the next day! The flavors have additional time to marry and deepen, making each subsequent serving a delightful experience.
- Freezing for Later Enjoyment: Lasagna is an excellent candidate for freezing, whether baked or unbaked. It can be stored in the freezer for up to three months. If freezing a full pan, ensure it’s tightly wrapped in layers of plastic wrap and aluminum foil to prevent freezer burn. When you’re ready to enjoy it, transfer the frozen lasagna to the refrigerator to defrost overnight. If baking from a cold, unbaked state, simply add approximately 20 minutes to the usual baking time.
- Reheating for Optimal Flavor: While the microwave offers speed, I consistently recommend reheating lasagna in the oven for the best results. Oven reheating ensures the layers maintain their integrity, the sauce remains creamy, and the cheese on top gets beautifully bubbly and slightly crisped, just like fresh. Place individual pieces on a baking sheet and bake, uncovered, at 350°F (175°C) for about 15-20 minutes, or until thoroughly heated through and bubbly.

Chicken Alfredo Lasagna
Cheesy, creamy chicken Alfredo lasagna is one of my favorite comfort food recipes with a touch of elegance! I make it with layers of chicken, spinach, pasta noodles and a simple homemade Alfredo sauce, all snuggled together with 3 types of melty cheeses. It’s special enough for holidays, but is also the perfect dinner for a cozy and relaxing weekend.
Ingredients
For the Alfredo Sauce –
- ¼ cup butter
- ¼ cup all-purpose flour
- 5-6 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoons Italian seasoning
- 1 tablespoon chicken base or 3 bouillon cubes
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 4 cups heavy cream
- 1 ½ cups grated parmesan cheese
- Salt and pepper to taste
For the Chicken Lasagna –
- 1 box lasagna noodles (traditional dried or no-boil)
- 3 cups chopped cooked chicken
- 15 ounce whole-fat ricotta cheese
- 15 ounce frozen chopped spinach, thawed and well-drained
- 4 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- Optional Add-ins: fresh basil, nutmeg, and/or crushed red pepper in the ricotta filling.
Instructions
- Make the Alfredo Sauce: Set a large sauté pan over medium heat. Add the butter and flour to the pan. Whisk well to form a roux, then continue to cook for 2 minutes. Toss in the minced garlic and stir well. Cook the roux with the garlic for another minute, then stir in the Italian seasoning, chicken base, onion powder, and heavy cream. Bring the sauce to a simmer, then stir in the Parmesan cheese. Once the Parmesan cheese is fully melted into the sauce, taste, and salt and pepper as needed. Turn off the heat and set aside.
- Cook the Pasta (if needed): You can use traditional pasta sheets or no-boil lasagna sheets for this recipe. If cooking traditional pasta, set a large pot of salted water over high heat. Bring it to a boil, then place the lasagna noodles in the pot. Gently stir and submerge the noodles in the water. Cook according to the package instructions. Once cooked to al dente, carefully lift the pasta sheets out of the water and lay them on a clean work surface to cool.
- Make the Spinach Ricotta Filling: Set out a medium bowl. Place the ricotta cheese in the bowl. Place the drained chopped spinach in a sieve and press it firmly to remove all excess water. It needs to be very dry. Then place the chopped spinach in the bowl with the ricotta. Salt and pepper liberally, and stir to combine. *If desired, add a dash or two of nutmeg, crushed red pepper flakes, or even some fresh chopped basil.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Set out a 9 x 13 inch baking dish.
- To Assemble: Place a small scoop of alfredo sauce in the bottom of the baking dish. Spread it around in a thin layer. Then add three lasagna noodles across the bottom of the baking dish. Top the lasagna noodles with 1 cup of chopped cooked chicken, approximately 1 cup of ricotta mixture, and 1 ¼ cup of shredded mozzarella cheese. Then scoop 1/3 of the remaining Alfredo sauce over the ingredients. Repeat with two more layers of lasagna noodles, chicken chunks, ricotta mixture, mozzarella cheese, and Alfredo sauce, creating 3 complete layers. *When you are finishing the third layer, the lasagna looks prettiest if you put the Alfredo sauce down before the final layer of mozzarella cheese, but it’s not necessary.
- Bake: Cover the baking dish with a sheet of foil and wrap the edges tightly. Bake for 30 minutes. Then carefully remove the foil and bake additional 15-20 minutes until the lasagna is golden on top and bubbly around the edges.
Notes
Serving tip – You can serve the lasagna immediately, but for best cutting and lifting results, it’s better to allow the lasagna to rest for at least one hour before serving.
- Storing Leftovers – Once the spinach and chicken Alfredo lasagna cools, transfer the pieces to an airtight container and keep them in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Leftovers often taste as good, if not better, the next day! The flavors and layers truly have time to meld and become even more delicious.
- Freezing – You can freeze lasagna for up to three months, whether it’s already baked or not. As noted above, be sure to wrap the pan tightly in layers of plastic wrap and aluminum foil. Then, the day before you’re ready to cook it, transfer it to the fridge to defrost overnight. If you’re baking it from a cold, unbaked state, just add about 20 minutes to the usual baking time.
- Reheating – I always recommend reheating lasagna in the oven rather than the microwave. Yes, the microwave is faster, but it won’t achieve the same nice texture and bubbly-brown cheese on top. Place the pieces on a baking sheet and bake, uncovered, for about 15-20 minutes at 350°F (175°C).

If you’re baking it from a cold, unbaked state, simply add approximately 20 minutes to the usual baking time.
